What is PAT testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT testing) is the process of inspecting and testing portable electrical appliances to check they're safe to use. Regular testing helps catch damaged cables, faulty plugs and worn equipment before they cause a shock, fire or workplace accident.

Every appliance we test gets a thorough visual inspection and, where appropriate, a series of electrical safety tests using calibrated PAT testing equipment. Results are recorded digitally, with clear reports and pass/fail labels provided for your own records — the kind of evidence you want on hand if an inspector, insurer or tenant ever asks for it.

We're based in Blyth, Northumberland, and we test appliances across the North East ourselves. No call centre, no subcontracted engineers you've never met.

CKML PAT Testing was set up to do one thing well: reliable, honestly-priced Portable Appliance Testing for businesses, landlords, schools and charities across the North East of England.

How we work

We start with a free, no-obligation site survey so you know exactly what's being tested and what it'll cost before anything is booked in. Appointments are arranged around your working hours, not the other way round — early mornings, evenings or weekends where that's what minimises disruption to your business.

Every appliance gets a visual inspection and, where appropriate, electrical safety testing using calibrated equipment. Results are logged digitally and backed up with printed reports and pass/fail labels, so you've always got evidence on hand if an insurer, inspector or tenant asks for it.

Who needs PAT testing?

If you're responsible for a workplace, a rented property, or a building the public uses, PAT testing is probably part of your duty of care.

There's no single law that says "you must PAT test every appliance every year." Instead, general health and safety legislation requires employers, landlords and those in control of premises to keep electrical equipment safe — and PAT testing is the standard, recognised way of demonstrating that you have.

Employers & business owners

Offices, shops, workshops and factories all use portable electrical equipment daily — kettles, monitors, extension leads, power tools. Regular testing helps you meet your obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Electricity at Work Regulations, and gives you a paper trail if it's ever needed.

Landlords & letting agents

If you rent out a property with electrical appliances included — kettles, microwaves, washing machines — you have a duty to ensure they're safe for tenants to use. PAT testing gives you clear, dated evidence of that, which is particularly useful for HMOs.

Schools & childcare settings

Anywhere children or vulnerable people are present, insurers and governing bodies typically expect a documented testing schedule for classroom and kitchen equipment.

Legal position

The law behind PAT testing

There's no law that names "PAT testing" directly — but several pieces of legislation make regular electrical safety checks a practical necessity.

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

This puts a duty of care on both employer and employee to ensure the safety of anyone using the work premises, including the self-employed. It's the foundation for most workplace electrical safety expectations in the UK.

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

These regulations require that electrical systems, including portable appliances, are maintained in a condition that prevents danger, so far as is reasonably practicable. They don't specify a testing frequency — that's a risk-based judgement — but they do require evidence of a reasonable, ongoing approach to safety.

Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999

These require employers to carry out risk assessments and put in place proportionate measures to control the risks they identify — which, for most sites with portable electrical equipment, includes some form of inspection and testing regime.

Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998

PUWER requires that work equipment, including electrical appliances, is suitable, maintained, and inspected where appropriate to ensure it remains safe to use.

What this means in practice

Regulators don't prescribe a fixed testing interval — it depends on the type of equipment, how it's used, and the environment it's in. A construction site power tool needs checking far more often than a rarely-used desk lamp in a quiet office. Insurers, however, will often expect to see a documented, risk-based testing schedule, which is where a PAT testing provider earns its keep: recommending a sensible frequency for your specific site, not a blanket one-size-fits-all schedule.
